The World Health Organization recently proposed new guidelines that recommend consuming less than 5% of our total daily calories from added sugars. For an adult at a normal body mass index, or BMI, 5% would be around 25 grams of sugar — or six teaspoons.
While that sounds like an awful lot at first glance, sugar is disguised in foods that you would never assume are covering it up. Liquid calories are also one of the biggest culprits when it comes to hidden sugars. In fact, CNN released a pretty incredible set of images that give a good visual representation of just how much sugar you’re drinking.
That coffee might have 3 1/2 donuts worth of sugar in it….mind blown.
