New Year, New You

This week we are highlighting a few of our members whose inspirational stories will spark your motivation in the new year. Sometimes, it’s tough to get started. We hope these stories will get you going this year and make 2014 your healthiest year yet.

Mitch Splinter: “Just go do something.”

I started using MapMyRun a couple of years ago and tried it for a few months. Then I got injured and stopped. Last April I weighed 270 lbs and decided that I needed to do something about it. I started running April 1st of 2013 and decided to sign up for my first 4-mile run to keep me motivated. I felt so good after that, I decided to train for my first 20k. It was hard, but I got through it. After that I then decided to run a race every month until the season was over.

Over the course of seven months I set a goal to do one race a month and I achieved that goal. I started with a 4-mile Run Like a Mother, Dam to Dam 20k, Sturgis Falls Half-Marathon, Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, Quad-Cities Marathon and the Des Moines Half -Marathon. I will continue to run and can’t wait for the next run season!

I read once that a year from now “you’ll wish you’d started today.” Getting started is the hardest part but once you start there’s no looking back. I’ve been staying motivated through my friends, family and quite honestly MapMyRun. Without MapMyRun and keeping track of everything, it would have been hard to see where I’ve been and keep moving forward. My favorite feature of the app is the voice that pops in to tell me how far I’ve gone and how long it took. It really helps me to train and to stay on pace, especially for long runs. On the website, my favorite is the calendar view and the statistics available. I like to see what I have done so I can push myself further.

Last month I hit a grand total of 1,000 total miles running, walking and biking. I now walk to work most days living 2.3 miles away (except it’s hard now with temperatures in the teens). I just started lifting and still keeping up my cardio. I started this journey at 270 lbs and now I am at 220 lbs and my goal before March is to be between 200-210 lbs, just in time to start training for my next marathon. MapMyRun has helped me and continues to help me reach my goals and now with the addition of Under Armour I can’t wait to see all the new things that will be coming.

My 2014 goal is to for sure run two marathons, but possibly three. I like the challenge and it keeps me motivated to stay active. I plan to continue to lose weight so I can go faster. Last year was a good year, but I’d like to improve. My piece of advice is to just go do something. Getting started was the hardest part, but once you start there is no looking back. It’s help to find someone to start with you. I had my girlfriend and another friend of ours who started with me and it was a good way to stay true to the schedule. After that first race I knew what I had to do and kept with it.

Thanks for the great app and the motivation!!!
