Let me be the first to welcome you to the official MapMyFitness blog. Why a blog, you may ask? As a company focusing on the health and fitness of 12.5M users worldwide, we wanted you to be as “in the know” as possible. Whether it’s a new product update, a feature launch or introducing you to our latest team member, this channel will be your one-stop shop for all things MapMyFitness. Our New Year’s resolution – to show you everything we have in store for 2013 – and trust me, there’s a lot coming.
There have been numerous positive changes for our team in 2012. One of the most noticeable is our user growth – exceeding our own expectations with how many new members we have on board (and which continues to grow). Next would have to be our growing team – our staff has nearly doubled in size (with the majority of our team calling either Austin or Denver home). Adding to the list is a new home – our Denver team has relocated to a new office that would make any start-up proud (Ping-Pong table included)! Let’s not forget our product updates – Courses, an entire website redesign and a recently launched user registration experience are just a few of our milestones in 2012 – with MANY more to come in the New Year.
This year has proven that connected health is more than just a trend, but a movement. I believe there is a new and higher level of accountability helping people feel more connected to their health and fitness. As we all know, obesity is not just a problem – it’s an epidemic, with more than one third of U.S adults qualifying as obese (35.7%) and the next one third qualifying as overweight. As major health problems escalate (including heart disease and diabetes), we want to educate people that incremental changes in their lifestyle can make a major difference. We strongly believe technology can easily be integrated into all of your very traditional exercise activities both indoor and outdoor and are looking for new ways to motivate the next generation to get active.
I believe MapMyFitness has helped shape the health and fitness tech industry. Our concept of using an online map to record activity into a training log was the first of its kind, and essentially gave birth to the fitness technology movement. We were among the very first health and fitness apps built for the Android and iPhone, and our innovative pairing of simple mapping with training data in a social community has created dozens of clone technologies. We are actively changing people’s lives through our motivational technology, and believe a person’s fitness history is his or her own personal story and we want to help you tell it to your friends and family. We believe socially telling this story helps millions of individuals stay motivated through strong accountability.
We continue to be brand agnostic – partnering with hundreds of industry-leading brands for seamless data integration including Garmin, Polar, Suunto, Timex, CycleOps, Magellan, Fitbit, and many others. Our robust platform allows our users to interact and motivate friends – no matter what technology they are using.
So, what’s coming in 2013? We can’t divulge ALL of our secrets but next year we will have a new focus on how mobile + web can play nice together, an updated user experience from new tools to new ways to share with your friends, and a variety of motivational tools to keep you on track to exceeding your individual goals.
Stay tuned for more updates, and thanks for all of your support. Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season – Robin
